Leadership
Driving outcomes through others.
Mental model
Leadership without authority is getting people aligned on an outcome when you cannot order them to do it. The real signal is sustained behavior change in others over weeks — not the meeting where they nodded along.
How to study Leadership
Begin by restating the mental model in your own words, then connect it to a concrete system you have built or operated. Name the mechanism, the constraint it addresses, and the trade-off it introduces. Use Leadership (Wikipedia), STAR interview method (Wikipedia) to check details, but close the source before writing your explanation. Retrieval is the learning step; rereading is only preparation.
Next, compare Leadership with the neighboring concepts in its roadmap. Ask what changes in correctness, latency, resource use, operability, and failure recovery. Complete STAR: leadership story and preserve the command, input, output, and one failed attempt as evidence. Finish by explaining the idea without jargon to someone who has not studied the track.
Proof of understanding
- Explain the mechanism from first principles and identify the state it reads or changes.
- Give one situation where the concept is the right choice and one where it is not.
- Predict a realistic failure mode before running the drill, then compare the prediction with evidence.
- Connect the result to a roadmap or build artifact instead of treating the concept as isolated trivia.

STAR: leadership story
Write a 4-paragraph STAR (Situation / Task / Action / Result) about a time you led without authority. Quantify the result.
Expected evidence: starStory() returns { situation, task, action, result, metric: { name, unit, before, after }, influenceTactic (how you got compliance without authority) }. The checker enforces structure only: four distinct sections of 20+ words, action the longest, 150+ words total, before ≠ after, and the result section must name the metric and state its after value. Aim for 250-350 words — that is the interview bar, not the checker’s.

- The room agreed and nothing changed two weeks later. What is the actual evidence that you influenced anyone?
